Gum Inflammation

photo for gum inflammation for evolve toothbrush, best for gum inflammationMost of us brush our teeth, but many of us don’t floss our teeth.  Perhaps we never learned how to floss, or we just don’t want to be bothered.  But this is a big mistake.

Just ask any dentist, or take it a step further, and consult a periodontist.

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease.  Periodontists are also experts in the placement of dental implants and the treatment of gum inflammation. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, the leading dental group that represents some 8,000 periodontists, experts agree that keeping the spaces between your teeth clean is vital if you want to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Key to getting into those spaces is daily flossing; and you need to not just floss, but floss properly. This means being gentle and not pushing the floss down too aggressively on your gums, which may cause gum inflammation, and move the gums away from the tooth.  Go easy when you floss.  Combined with careful brushing twice a day with a soft-bristle brush and regular dental visits, you will likely avoid getting gum disease.

Gum disease is caused when prolonged exposure to bacteria in dental plaque causes gum inflammation. Gingivitis, early-stage gum disease, is reversible with good oral care, including brushing and flossing, which removes the plaque in between the teeth or under the gum line where a toothbrush cannot reach. But if left untreated, gingivitis can progress into more severe periodontal disease, a leading cause of tooth loss.

So; if you have bleeding, inflamed gums, loose teeth, or bad breath, and suspect you have gum disease, if you smoke or gum disease runs in the family, see your dentist, or visit a periodontist for a complete evaluation.
