Gums Hurt

photo for gums hurt for evolve toothbrush, best for hurting gumsIf your gums hurt, don’t despair.  There are a myriad of reasons that may be causing pain in your gums, and many of them are in your control to change.  You might be neglecting your gums by not brushing and flossing regularly, which can be fixed by beginning a new and better oral health regimen.  You might have an infected tooth, which has begun to affect its surrounding gums; your dentist can help fix that.  It’s possible, too that hormones are causing your hurt gums, as they do when you’re pregnant menstruating or menopausal.

Let’s examine the first reason.  You may be brushing everyday, but if you are using an old, hard-bristle brush that is too rough on your gums – composed of delicate tissue –   it will make your gums hurt even more, and they will likely turn red, swollen, inflamed and  begin to bleed.   You can fix this problem by taking that hard brush and throwing it away forever.  Buy yourself a soft-bristle brush and go easy on your gums; brush them gently with a massaging, circular motion.

Perhaps you are in fact flossing, but you’re using floss that’s too thick and forcing it between your teeth, or you’re flossing too deeply, and grinding the floss into your gums.  This, too causes puffy and purplish swollen gums.  There is an art to flossing properly, where you gently insert the floss, back and forth between your teeth, easily.

Visiting your dentist regularly is vital to determining the state of your oral health, and if your gums hurt, bleed, are swollen or give you any trouble, see your dentist immediately to get to the heart of the problem, and to the plan to solve it!
