Sore On Gums

picture for sore on gums for Evolve Toothbrush, best toothbrush for sore gums. There may be several reasons for the appearance of a sore on gums in your mouth. You might have an apthous ulcer, more commonly known as a canker sore. Canker sores are small shallow sores that form on the inside of your mouth, often at the base of your gums. They’re usually yellow or white, and surrounded by red, puffy soft tissue.

A canker sore on gums in your mouth is not contagious, though it can be painful. Sometimes it can make it difficult for you to eat, or to talk. This is a nuisance, but it won’t last long. Most canker sores can be treated with mouth rinses, specialty mouth pastes, and if necessary, medication from your doctor.

You might wonder what causes a canker sore on gums. Truth is, scientists aren’t exactly sure. Many subscribe to the theory that there’s a problem with the body’s immune system. Stress – the culprit for so many of the body’s ills – is thought to be a trigger for canker sores. This includes emotional stress, and hormonal stress due to menstruation or mouth injuries.

Food, too can set a canker sore into motion. Citrus and acidic foods trigger a sore on gums, and can also make an existing sore even more uncomfortable.

Don’t panic, though. Canker sores are very common, with over 3 million cases a year in the USA. Canker sores occur most frequently in people aged under 30. Happily they are easy to treat, and usually disappear in one to three weeks, with the pain subsiding in 7-10 days.

If your canker sore on gums does not go away, gets bigger, if pain persists, or if you have a fever, rash, headaches or diarrhea, see your doctor or dentist immediately.
